Grant Funding tips and suggestions.

Finding funding for grants can be a pretty hefty task and obviously review boards can be pretty daunting. Here are some general tips to writing and receiving grant funding:

Read the entire application form and keep to it. Grant application forms are strenuous and even tedious documents so it seems easy to just breeze over the material thinking that some of it may not apply- this isn't true. Follow the rules and regulations exactly how they appear in the documents and this will keep you and the review board on good terms!

Be a clear writer. If you try and write confusing sentences and use an especially large vocabulary then you may just get your application tossed out. The best way to communicate clearly is to write shorter, more concise sentences. It doesn't matter about impressing the reviewers it's about getting your point across.

Computer spell checkers aren't always the most reliable tool. Everyone loves their "Spell Check" option on their computers but you can't just accept this as your only form of grammar checking. Reviewing your application and cover letter for grammar as well as material is crucial because even the smallest grammar or spelling errors can make you look unprofessional.

Pay attention to the criteria set for you. Making sure you have all of the documents and have followed each and every step is very important. If you fail to include certain paperwork or if you skip a step in the application process you can easily have your form tossed in the garbage.

Be completely honest. If you lie at any point in your application then you could face some pretty hefty penalties and you will get a reputation of dishonesty- which could be bad in future grant applications. Your grant application serves as a great way to show your honesty- the review board will appreciate it.

Don't beat around the bush. Avoid ambiguities at all costs because reviewers are great at catching any unclear/ fuzzy wording in your grant application. If you are especially vague about what you want to do with your research then the review board will not respect your ability to work in an effective way.

Appearance is crucial so package your application professionally. How your application shows up in the mail is a very important thing so make sure it looks professional when you drop it off at the Post Office. Making sure that the application and cover letter are readable and professional is another consideration. Use readable type and allow proper spacing between lines because you want to make it as easy to read as possible for your reviewers.

Take your time preparing your application. It is usually pretty obvious when you throw your application together at the last minute so making sure you are well prepared is a big part of the game. Get all of your documents well ahead of time and write your cover letter early and you'll have plenty of time to review it.
